Still “Feels Like Jail”? Life for Foreign Workers Nearly 1 Year On In Singapore
It’s been 11 months since the COVID-19 pandemic hit dormitories across Singapore, resulting in a months-long lockdown. Talking Point speaks to dorm residents and gets them to film what life is like inside these confines now, to see if things have changed.
At some dorms, communal eating facilities and playgrounds are still out of bounds. Beyond going out to work, workers have to spend most of their time in their rooms, with only about 3 hours allowed outside on their day off at recreation centres.
Kong Chee Min, the CEO of Centurion Corporation, in charge of Westlite Accommodation dormitories, maintains that these restrictive measures are important to reduce crowding from co-mingling of dormitory workers, effectively mitigating infection rates.

Martin Koh, deputy chief of ACE GROUP from Singapore Manpower Ministry says that plans have been made to increase the frequency of visits to recreation centres. On top of that, 7 Quick Build Dorms have been launched, which improve the current living conditions of workers. According to the Ministry of Manpower, companies with no ongoing work or funds to pay salaries should send their expat workers back home.
Companies are landing fewer contracts and projects due to the economic downturn as a result of which hundreds of expat workers are left in the lurch without salary, sometimes for months at a time.
Sulaiman Mohammed, the Jordanian boy who was injured in the car fire in Sur last month has been discharged from khoula hospital.
Medics are treating his elder sister whose condition is still critical but is in a position now to undergo cosmetic surgeries.
They may be famous for their clumsy long bodies and stumpy legs, but that didn't stop them, from competing for the title of the fastest sausage dog at Melbourne's annual Dachshund Race on Saturday.

Ever since Qatar won the rights to host the FIFA World Cup in 2010, its treatment of migrant workers has made international headlines. News stories and human rights organizations revealed migrant workers who built the stadiums, hotels, and all the new infrastructure required for the World Cup were being forced to work, not getting paid, unable to leave, and in some cases, dying.
At the heart of the abuse faced by migrant workers is the kafala system. A system prevalent in Gulf states that ties workers to their sponsors, it often gives sponsors almost total control of migrant workers’ employment and immigration status.
Due to all the scrutiny Qatar has been under, some reforms have been put in place, but the kafala system is more than a law — it’s a practice. And while these reforms exist on paper, human rights organizations say there’s still a long way to go.
To understand how hundreds of thousands of migrant workers were stuck in an exploitative system while building the stadiums for the World Cup, watch our 10-minute video above.

President Bola Tinubu has launched the Expatriate Employment Levy to facilitate home-grown skill retention and technology domestication and to balance employment opportunities between Nigerians and expatriates.
President also said the aim is to close wage gaps between expatriates and the Nigerian labour force while increasing employment opportunities for qualified Nigerians in foreign companies operating in the country.

In this 7-month update video, I cover some of the challenges we've faced in Singapore’s rental market and rental hikes (in 2023), and where we've been living since moving here. I also talk about how plans might not work out and the emotional challenges of this huge relocation. Singapore is the second most expensive city in the world (after New York City), so if you’re moving to Singapore 2024, this video will reveal some of what to (possibly) expect in 2024. I hope you enjoy the video - like and subscribe for more. In the meantime, thank you so much for watching :) Happy New Year 2024!!! 🇸🇬❤️
btw: the December rains part of this video includes some lines from a famous movie - do you know from which one? :)
Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish:
We went too far in our thinking
And forgot that destinies are written.
